Weekend Review – Round 1 2017

Brought to you by Mornington Racing Course

Mornington 11.9.75 Lost to Frankston YCW 14.13.97

Mornington jumped out of the blocks, taking Frankston YCW by surprise and holding a 29 point lead at quarter time. They must have put something in the water at the quarter time break as the Stonecats came back to steal the lead by 16 points at halftime. And from there Frankston YCW took control of the game rolling out of the kennel 22 point winners.

Chelsea 5.7.37 Lost to Edithvale-Aspendale 13.12.90

There was a fair amount of hype about both of these sides in the offseason, and by the end of the day, the Eagles showed that they mean business in 2017. Edi-Asp never looked in doubt controlling the game from start to finish and eventually running out 53 point victors. Michael Meehan had 4 goals to his name while young gun Liam Harris was named best on ground.

Mt Eliza 10.14.74 Defeated Seaford 7.10.52

The Redlegs started the day in control with 11 to 1 scoring shots, but inaccuracy was the flavour for Mt Eliza, kicking 3.8. The Redlegs kept moving forward and maintaining a lead but Seaford certainly didn’t back down, and by three-quarter time were only trailing by 7 points. In what was a tight last quarter, Mt Eliza found another gear, and locked in a 22 point win.

Langwarrin 5.15.45 Lost to Karingal 8.8.56

What a game this one was. Langwarrin got off to a great start, and a 14 point lead at quarter time, only to add 3 points after that and see Karingal take a 8 point lead into the main break. The Bulls were able to extend their lead to 18 points and despite a late surge from the home side took an 11 point win and the 4 points back to the Bull pit. Veteran Michael Burke was best on for the Bulls.

Bonbeach 7.10.52 Lost to Pines 10.9.69

Last time these two sides met, it was back in September in the 1st semi-final, and Pines advanced into the preliminary final. Unfortunately for the Sharks the cards fell the same way, but the positives being a slightly smaller margin than the 1st semi-final, which shows that Bonbeach are certainly are on the improve. Pines were just the better side on the day, with Tim Bongetti kicking 4 and taking best on ground honors.

Mornington 37 Def Frankston YCW 25

Mornington started the season with a convincing win of the Stonecats. Mornington have certainly been improving over the last few seasons and looks like they are going to take the next step in 2017.

Mt Eliza 37 Def by Seaford 42

Some heavy recruiting from the Redlegs in the offseason saw them entering this game full of confidence. Unfortunately, Seaford was just the better side on the day winning by 5 points.

Langwarrin 21 Lost to Karingal 50

Karingal certainly made sure they started the 2017 season on the right foot, with a 29 point win over Langwarrin. No doubt the Bulletts will be looking to go that one step further this season.

Bonbeach 38 Defeated Pines 37

What a game this was! With only one point deciding the game, it had everyone on the edge of their seats. The Sharks were lucky enough to be the team in front when final whistle blew.
