Edithvale-Aspendale youngster Nick Carlon will lead the brightest crop of country football talent into battle against the Victorian Amateur Football Association (VAFA) after being named the captain of the Victoria Country Under 19s.

Carlon, who has played every game for the Edi-Asp seniors this year, received the honour from Vic Country Under-19 coach Damien Sexton ahead of the annual Under-19 Challenge Cup to be held at Ballarat’s MARS Stadium on Sunday 8 July.

Mt Eliza’s Bailey Breen and Tom Small have also been selected in the 23-man squad, alongside exciting Rosebud defender Josh Harris, while Karingal’s Jarrod Sullivan has been selected as an emergency.

Carlon, pictured, right, with MPNFL Interleague coach Chris Holcombe, said it was a huge thrill to be named the leader of such an elite group of talented youngsters.

He returns to the team after playing a key role in last year’s victory over the VAFA at Frankston Park.

“Sexto (Sexton) told me at our last training session on Sunday and it was a bit of a surprise, to be honest, but it’s great to have the opportunity to lead these boys out and keep up the great record of the country team,” Carlon said.

“I’ve had a couple of days to let it sink in now, and it’s a great honour and really special considering how many players were involved in the initial training squad. It would be special now to go out and get the win, and represent all the players that missed out and everyone from country Victoria.”

Of the nine leagues represented in the Energy Safe Vic Country Under 19 squad, the MPNFL and Ovens and Murray are the best represented with five selections each, followed by Goulburn Valley and Geelong with four.

The Energy Safe Vic Country Under 19s have recorded emphatic victories in their last four encounters against the VAFA, defeating their metro rivals by four-points last year at Frankston Oval.

The Under 19 Challenge Cup match will kick off at 11.30am before the highly anticipated 2018 AFL Victoria Community Cup clash between Vic Country and Vic Metro at 2pm.

The MPNFL is also well represented in the WorkSafe Vic Country senior representative squad with Frankston YCW trio Brenton Credlin, Christian Ongarello and Lachie Wallace joining Frankston Bombers star Sam Fox in an extended 29-man squad.

Eleven leagues are represented in the Vic Country senior outfit, with Geelong Football Netball League boasting the most selections (six), followed by Ovens and Murray (five), with the MPNFL and Goulburn Valley having four players selected.

St. Kilda great Danny Frawley will once again coach the WorkSafe AFL Vic Country side for the second consecutive year, as he prepares to secure his first win in the role.

Seymour’s Jason Cole has been named the captain of the Vic Country squad, while Xavier Moloney (Swan Hill FC), Kayne Pettifer (Kyabram FC) and Bob McCallum (Drouin FC) will support him in the role of Vice Captains.
